Any practice or occupational healthcare professional or assistant who is involved in a spirometry program or facilitating spirometry in any setting and who has (must have) undergone the four day spirometry short course and achieved a Certificate of Competence in Spirometry. Spirometry operators need to complete spirometry refresher training every 3-5 years in order to keep their certificate of competence in spirometry valid.

Course Description & Objectives
This Spirometry Refresher Course is designed to provide a review for health professionals and assistants who conduct spirometry tests in occupational and clinical settings in the theoretical and practical components of all aspects of spirometry testing including pre-test procedures, how to get the best tests from clients as well as data quality control and post test procedures.
Included are any changes in the field of spirometry testing and pertinent regulations.
The goal of the course is not only to review what the recommendations and requirements are for conducting tests and interpreting results, but also why the recommendations and requirements were made.
The course reviews the following with special reference to new guidelines and up-to-date information:
- Spirometry equipment quality control, calibration and verification
- The flow volume curve and measurements of spirometry
- Cleaning and equipment maintenance
- How to prepare a subject for spirometry, indications and contra-indications
- The correct performance of spirometry
- The effects of technical errors and spirometer malfunctions on test results
- Practice recognising testing errors, using problem graphs from quality control samples
- Normal values and basic normal vs. abnormal results
- Recording and reporting results
- Reversibility Studies
- Practical spirometry
The course consists of enthusiastic, stimulating and exciting lectures packed with updated information on every facet of spirometry. Power point presentations, questions, discussion, revision worksheets, fun quizzes and reviews of real life spirometry tracings are used to update the attendees.
There will also be some practical demonstration, tips and practice during the 2 day workshop.
A “Certificate of Attendance in Spirometry Refresher Training” is issued to all learners who attend the full two days and interact appropriately during this time.
An up-to-date spirometry refresher manual using current South African guidelines and draft guidelines (i.e. the most current information available) is provided as well as all quizzes and worksheets for use during sessions.
Please bring own calculators, pens and paper and any spirometry tracings that are of interest or you would like to discuss.

A workshop can be arranged at any location nationally within South Africa or in other African countries for 8 students or more each time on dates suitable for learners and the facilitator.

Refreshments throughout the day and a light lunch are included in the course fee.
Fees must be received 30 days prior to the course date. Since expenses are fixed, refunds cannot be given unless written cancellation is received two weeks prior to the course. The fee is also transferable to any subsequent course within a six months period. The fee includes teas and a light lunch on each day, also beverages throughout the day, but does not include hotel or transportation costs.
