Setting Up and Running a New Spirometry Service Training

Who should attend?

Every quality spirometry programme needs to have plans, procedures, guidelines, information, standard operating procedures and auditing tools. In addition there should be an internal company Spirometry Lead who is responsible for the overall quality of the programme including on-going updates and maintenance of the programme.

Therefore any practice and/or occupational healthcare professional who is already involved in carrying out spirometry or who is wanting to start to carry out spirometry in any setting and who does not yet have the above procedures and guidelines in place for the running of their spirometry service, or who is in need of review of current equipment and practices,should attend.

Course Description & Objectives

The objective of this one day workshop is to provide an informed and professional opinion of the various tasks that need planning, initiation and implementation in order for the standard of spirometry testing to be brought up to the best possible standard and in accordance with local (South African) and international guidelines.

Course Content

The following subjects will be reviewed, templates given and assistance in personalisation of records will also be given on:

  • Assessment of the various standards that should be in place in a good spirometry testing programme
  • What you need to take and use from your Spirometry Manual
  • Review of Baseline Calibration vs Verification, Biological Calibration and keeping correct documentation of each
  • Writing and Implementing Infection Control checklists
  • Writing and implementing a good standard operating procedure
  • Write a Spirometry Auditing Tool together with actions for annual implementation of auditing of each staff member involved
  • Writing patient information leaflets/posters
  • Writing information for line managers
  • Writing an appropriate maintenance schedule
  • Appropriate referral plans
  • Certificates and Qualifications
  • Statistics and good record keeping

Course Programme

A fully prepared file complete with all documentation to be covered on the workshop as well as for use in the workplace after training will be used in combination with up to date enthusiastic, stimulating and exciting power point slides to review the necessary information. Time will be made for interactive discussion as well as mentored personalisation of documents within the file.

A fully prepared, sectionised and organised file complete with all documentation to be covered on the workshop as well as for use in the workplace after training will be used in combination with up to date power point slides all according to the most current information available. Time will be made for interactive discussion as well as mentored personalisation of documents within the file. A “Certificate of Attendance” is issued to all attendees.

Please bring:

  • own calculators, pens and paper, a punch, stapler, highlighters, coloured pens, pencil and a rubber
  • your spirometer manual
  • current standard operating procedures, auditing tools, certificates of qualification of all staff involved in spirometry testing in your workplace
  • all documents that came with the spirometer i.e. the baseline calibration
  • One or two calibration reports
  • your SANS 451 if you have one
  • a pack of 20 plastic sheets
  • any specific questions or documents that are of interest or you would like to discuss.

Dates & Locations

A workshop can be arranged at any location nationally within South Africa or in other African countries for 8 students or more each time on dates suitable for learners and the facilitator.

Cost

R1850

Course fee includes a Comprehensive Manual, a full Start Up File for use after the workshop within the Spirometry Service in the Workplace and a Certificate of Attendance.

Registration

Fees must be received 30 days prior to the course date. Since expenses are fixed, refunds cannot be given unless written cancellation is received two weeks prior to the course. The fee is also transferable to any subsequent course within a six months period. The fee includes teas and a light lunch on each day, also beverages throughout the day, but does not include hotel or transportation costs.
